1. Short answer questions.
a. What do you mean by information retrieval?
Ans: Information retrieval covers accessing and obtain information from the World Wide Web. For example, if you want to visit the SEBA( Board of Secondary Education, Assam) website, type http:// www.sebaonline.org/ in the web address bar and press the Enter key.
After a few seconds, the homepage of SEBA will appear on the screen. We find all the information published by SEBA on this website.
b. What is Web surfing?
Ans: Exploring information on the web is called web surfing.
c. Mention the names of any two popular e-mail programs.
Ans: The two popular email programs are yahoo.com and hotmail.com.
d. What do you mean by spam ?
Ans: Spam is an unwanted mail that is sent to multiple recipients who have not specifically requested for the email message. One must never reply to a mail that is identified as spam.
e. Mention the types of files that can be attached to an e-mail message.
Ans: The types of files that can be attached to an email message are word document, photographs, presentations, sound files, etc.
f. What are chat rooms?
Ans: Websites offering chat also provide special areas for chatting called chat rooms.
g. What is FTP?
Ans: File Transfer Protocol(FTP) is the simplest way to exchange files between computers on the internet. It makes use of the Internet TCP/IP protocol for this purpose.
FTP is commonly used to transfer web page files from their creator to the computer that acts as the web server for everyone on the Internet. It is also commonly used to download programs and other files to our computer from other servers.
h. What is the advantage of e-sites?
Ans: The advantages of e-sites is it offers services that are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
i. Give examples of two e-learning sites.
Ans: The two e-learning sites are eshiksha.com and enchantedlearning.com.
j. Give one limitation of e-banking.
Ans: The limitation of e-banking is security, which is one of the major issues of e-banking transactions.
2. Long answer questions
a. What is e-mail? Mention any two advantages of using e-mail.
Ans: Email is an electronic exchange of messages from one computer to another. We can send text, pictures, sound messages, etc across the globe within a fraction of a second.
Any two advantages of using E-mail are -
(i) It is a faster means of correspondence then an ordinary post. A message can reach any point of the world in seconds to an e-mail.
(ii) The messages that we want to send via e-mail may consist of only a few lines or several hundred lines of text. Unlike the postal services, the message is not charge by weight.
b. What are the two parts of an e-mail? Explain with an example.
Ans: An e-mail address typically has to main parts: the user's login name and the hostname.
For example :- alsan@del2.mtnl.net.in,
where 'in' refers to India, 'net' refers to the organization name of the ISP, 'del2' refers to the server or computer name of the ISP, '@' is a symbol that remains the same in every email address, and 'alsan' refers to the username.
c. Explain the following features of an e-mail program:
i. Inbox
Ans: Inbox gives the user information on all the incoming mails. When a user login to his email account, he can see all the new messages he has in his inbox. These are displayed one below the other, with the latest message appearing first. The inbox also shows the sender, the subject, the date it was sent, and the size of the mail. Entries for unread messages are displayed in bold font. User can open the mail by clicking on the message entry.
ii. Draft
Ans: All the unsend messages can be saved in the draft folder. The messages to be send later remains saved in this folder.
iii. Sent
Ans: All the messages that have been sent from the users email account can be saved in the sent folder. This folder gives all the details of the sent messages. The user can also keep a copy of his message by clicking the checkbox besides 'save to sent mail folder' option to save a copy of the email message in the sent folder.
d. What are Netiquettes? Explain any two.
Ans: Netiquettes are the conventional rules for correct behaviour on the Internet. These are simple guidelines to be followed by all the internet users by sending messages.
Any two netiquettes are-
(i) No flaming : Angry or heated messages are called flames. When you send such type of messages you offend the recipients and are therefore not encouraged.
(ii) Turn off CAPS LOCK : Typing in capital letters in your e-mails is considered shouting at the recipients. Enclosing the text in asterisks(*) is the accepted method of emphasizing any part of a message.
e. What is a search engine? Give few examples of search engines.
Ans: A search engine is a program that is designed to search for information on the World Wide Web. A search engine searches documents for the specified keywords and returns a list of the documents containing them. It is an important software program used for information retrieval on the web.
For example: Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc.
f. How is video conferencing different from chatting?
Ans: Video conferencing or video teleconferencing(VTC) imitates a real life meeting environment. With the help of a VTC facility, we can see other people while talking to them. This facility connects catters located at different locations, who are participating in a conference/meeting simultaneously.
Whereas, chat is a program that enables us to communicate with others in real time through text messages. Communicating online through text is called chatting. The user can login to certain websites and communicate with other users who are online by using an Internet chat software.
g. Write any three advantages of video conferencing.
Ans: The three advantages are-
(i) Faculty members can keep in touch with the class even when they are away for a meeting or conference.
(ii) Guest lecturers from a remote area can deliver lectures to a class in some other institution without being physically present at that institution.
(iii) An employer in one city can interview in another city.
h. What do you mean by e-commerce? List the advantages of e-commerce.
Ans: Electronic Commerce(e-commerce) means buying and selling of any product through the Internet. It is a way of doing business over the Internet. Companies set up websites providing details of their products and services.
The advantages of e-commerce are-
(i) It is easy to start a business at low cost as an increasing number of consumers are drawn by the convenience of shopping at home.
(ii) It is available 24×7.
(iii) The buying and selling procedures are fast.
(iv) There is no need of setting up a physical company.
i. Differentiate between downloading and uploading files.
Ans: Downloading files involves the transfer of files from a remote system to our computer system. From the client/user's point of view, to download a file is to request it from another computer and then receive or retrieve it.
Whereas, uploading files involve the transfer of files from one's computer hard disk drive to another remote system. From an Internet user's point of view, uploading involves sending a file to a computer that is set up to receive it.
j. What are the benefits of e-learning to students and teachers?
Ans: The benefits of e-learning to students are-
(i) It reduces the travel time and cost.
(ii) Study materials can be accessed conveniently at any time and at any place.
(iii) It encourages students to take responsibility for their learning and therefore, builds self confidence.
The benefits of e-learning to teachers are-
(i) The lessons can be made more interactive by combining text with audio, video, animation, etc.
(ii) The same content is delivered to every learner, thus preventing problems caused when different teachers supply different study materials on the same subject.
(iii) The cost associated with infrastructure, instructor's salary, etc is reduced.
